The Green Lantern Movie Review

Green Lantern First Flight is exactly what you would expect from the people at Warner Premiere as this is the fifth in their series of direct to dvd animated movie. The storytelling is well done, the voice acting is top notch, and the animation, like that of their previous four titles, is above anything out in the market right now that is being done in the US.

The story of First Flight is just what you would expect from the title, it closely follows elements of Hal Jordan’s first use of the Green Lantern ring. It immediately starts off with Jordan receiving the ring from the dying Abin Sur and how he comes to terms with who he now is. From there, Jordan is taken to the Guardians of the Galaxy, creators of the Green Lantern rings and self appointed watchmen of the universe, to see if he is fit to wear the ring that has chosen him. To help facilitate the Guardian’s decision, Sinestro, thought of as their greatest progeny, takes it upon him to train the rookie under his watchful eye. But things quickly change from what everyone perceives as events are set in motion that will quickly make Sinestro the greatest threat that the Guardians have ever faced, and make Hal Jordan one of the greatest protectors assigned to the Corps. The story is paced out fairly well over the 77 minutes of the feature. Though at times it does feel a bit rushed, and certain elements of Jordan and Sinestro’s past feel left out, the rest of the story does a good enough job to make you forgive these deletion to the back story.

As with all DC animated features, even going as far back as the Batman Animated series, the voice acting is top notch. Christopher Meloni, best known for portraying Det. Stabler on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, stars as Hal Jordan, bringing a sense of authority to the voice as his past acting credits would attest to. Victor Garber, known for playing Jack Bristo on the Alias television series, voices the evil Sinestro. His voice and subtle tones bring the right amount of depth to the character as he sounds just like one would expect Sinestro to sound like; confidant, arrogant, and calculating. Other well known actors lend their voices to the feature including Galactica’s Tricia Helfer, Kill Bill’s Michael Madsen, Boston Legal’s John Larroquette, Buffy’s Juliet Landau, That ‘70s Show’s Kurtwood Smith, and veteran character actress Olivia d’Abo. All do great credit to the roles they are playing and do their best to make the characters sounds as believable and life-like as they could.

The animation is just what you would expect from a DC animated feature. DC animation has easily kept in stride with some of the best animation from around the world, and that tradition is continued in this movie. Character designs and fight sequences are probably the best that I have seen from the five features released by Warner Premiere. Subtle 3D animated backgrounds blend in perfectly with the hand drawn characters and objects as you never feel that you are watching two separate dimensions of film. The colors brought out by the fight sequences play especially well in the space backdrop of the movie. Greens, reds, and yellows all pop at you against the blackness of space of the metal of a space station. The only complaint that I have with the animation actually has to do with just one sequence as it is pretty obvious that the person in charge of it was a huge Sailor Moon fan, and it won’t hard for you to tell which one it is.

Extras included in this video are especially a nice touch if you are a fan of DC comics and animation. There are character profiles on the Corps members and Guardians for new comers to the series, as well as an interview with DC uber scribe Geoff Johns on the mythology of Green Lantern. You also get a first look at their next project being released, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, as well as extra insight into three of their previous films, Wonder Woman, Batman: Gotham Knight, and Justice League: The New Frontier. You are also treated to a look behind the scenes at DC as they discuss the current Green Lantern storyline, Blackest Night. As a special treat, there are also three cartoons included in the video for you to watch. In Blackest Night parts 1 and 2 from the Justice League animated series, as well as the Duck Dodgers episode The Green Loontern. As a plus to blu-ray owners, you are treated to five additional episodes. Hearts and Minds parts 1 and 2 from the Justice League animated series and The Once and Future Thing parts 1 and 2 as well as the episode The Return from the Justice League Unlimited series.

All in all, this video is packed with enough goodies for any fan of the character and DC to enjoy. Minor issues aside, I would definitely recommend that any fan of animated movies pick up a copy of this movie. DC once again proves that they can produce high quality animation and storytelling and show that they can, and will, do more over time.
